“Digital DCH”
Just when you
thought it was bad enough with the wildly successful digital
cable filter scam, along comes the “Digital DCH. SCAM. I have
not personally been able to test this device; however, I am
a frequent reader and participator in “hacker forums.” I have
seen postings from several people who have tried this device
and been burned.
This scam convinces
people that this device blocks Pay per View billing but “somehow”
still allows your cable box to communicate with the cable network.
This one is really a no-brainer folks, because you can’t have
it both ways. You can’t block ONLY the Pay per View billing
while still allowing all other signals to pass through this
device. Either all communication is blocked, or all communication
is not blocked. The reality is: this DCH device does nothing more than an ordinary Digital Cable
Filter. Sooner or later your box will be disconnected from
your cable network, and you’ll wind up paying a huge bill.
So how do the
promoters of this device get away with selling it? They do
it in two very devious ways:
- This is what you are told when you get this device:
“We have recently come ‘under suspicion’ of selling blackbox
devices, and thus all credit card transactions are automatically
reported to the local cable company of the credit card holder
(buyer of this device) (e.g. if you purchase this device with
your credit card, it will instantly be revealed to your cable
company that you have purchased this device).” Of course,
this is completely ridiculous! However, since people purchasing
this box are well aware they are attempting to purchase an
illegal piece of hardware, the last thing they want to do
is do anything that would call attention to themselves – especially
directly with their own local cable company! Thus you will
be asked to pay for the Digital DCH with a personal check via regular postal mail (it will
be further explained to you that postal mail has no regulations
covering items such as this and essentially nobody will know
you have the device). And of course once you mail in a personal
check you have absolutely no protection whatsoever. After
the scammers have your money, you will likely never hear from
them ever again, and nobody will likely ever talk to you by
phone again either. Any phone calls you place will not be
returned. If you’ve been talked out of buying a digital cable
filter to descramble digital cable and are now thinking about
the Digital DCH, THINK AGAIN.
- Here’s the second reason this con works: If you
do not wish to pay by personal check, you will be asked to
pay by COD. If you do this, you will at least receive your
Digital DCH, unlike #1 above. When it arrives at your door
you will pay for it, and your money will now change hands.
And you will be stuck with a piece of hardware that only does
what any ordinary high pass filter (e.g. digital cable filter)
does. When your box gets locked down and you end up with
a huge cable bill, I don’t suggest you try calling the people
who sold it to you. So how do the scammers get away with this
long term? Easy. Who will report them to anybody? After
all, every single buyer of the Digital DCH was trying to purchase
illegal cable blackbox hardware. Reporting this scam is as
good as turning yourself in as well! Case closed. You’ve
lost your money, and you’ve got no recourse. If you
are looking to descramble digital cable, be wary.
